Utility Worker- WPCD Definition: Under supervision of a Superintendent, Division Supervisor or lead worker, installs, repairs and maintains utility (water or sewer) lines.
Essential Functions: (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics.
This list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this class).
Tasks: General: Performs general laborer duties associated with the installation, repair and maintenance of sewer or water lines.
Responds to customer complaints.
Maintains proper safety equipment at work site.
Investigates, isolate and repair leaks.
Restores job site to original status by replacing surface.
May cut weeds or shovel snow.
May drive trucks to work sites.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Duties specific to WPCD: Install, maintain and repair manholes, sewer lines and line extensions.
Inspects and cleans sewer lines.
Lifting and installing manhole frames and covers.
Working in confined spaces.
Prepares and completes various forms of paperwork.
Knowledge, Skills, and Other Characteristics: Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and techniques used in the repair and maintenance in area of assignment.
Knowledge of occupational safety precautions.
Knowledge of the uses and purposes of utility tools and equipment.
Skill in the use and interpretation of utility maps.
Skill in use of appropriate equipment, tools and devices.
Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with city staff and the public.
Skill in performing heavy manual labor.
Skill in learning specific tasks and duties through on-the-job training.
Skill in following simple oral and/or written instructions.
Skill in using proper safety precautions related to all work performed.
Skill in identifying the equipment needs for each assigned project.
Materials and Equipment: Utility truckPower Tools (Jackhammer, saws, pumps, Generators, compressor, etc.
) Hand Tools (Wrenches, hammer, shovel, etc.
) Mental and Physical Abilities: Mental abilities include the ability to follow written and oral instruction which could have an impact on the safety of self and others.
Physical requirements include the ability to lift (50-80 lbs.
) occasionally, ability to lift and move moderate (25-50 lbs.
) materials frequently, ability to climb in and out of holes and trenches, ability to work in confined spaces, ability to walk on uneven surfaces in and around construction sites, ability to bend, stoop, and twist while performing daily duties.
Working Conditions: Work involves exposure to dust, weather conditions and hazardous conditions such as buried electrical lines, natural gas lines, raw sewage, chemicals, moving mechanical parts and exposure to loud machinery.
Qualifications: High School Diploma or GED and two (2) years of physical laborer experience.
Experience in area of assignment is preferred.
Must possess a valid drivers license; however, a commercial drivers license (CDL) is preferred.
May be required to secure certification specific to area of assignment.
Special Qualifications: May be required to be on-call for (24) hour service.
